Inga Ting is The Sydney Morning Herald's data journalist, specialising in number analysis and visual storytelling using interactive graphics. Her recent stories cover a range of topics, from how pattern recognition influences wedding dates to falling entry standards at NSW's top universities — a collaboration with education reporter Eryk Bagshaw based on leaked admissions data. Her investigation on deaths in NSW prison custody, which involved gathering and analysing data from more than 130 coronial inquests, was described by the publisher Crikey as “the most outstanding journalism project Crikey has ever conducted and the most in-depth media inquisition of the issue.” Her series on women in prison, also published by Crikey, was a finalist in the 2011 Human Rights Media Awards.
