Gerard Ryle led the team that divulged the Panama Papers, the 11.5 million leaked documents from 40 years of activity of the Panama law firm Mossack Fonseca that won a 2017 Pulitzer Prize for journalism. Gerard is the director of the International Consortium of Investigative Journalists (ICIJ) in Washington, DC. The Panama Papers brought together 376 investigative journalists from 109 news organisations in 76 countries, who spent months collaborating in researching and checking the documents, using protected communication channels, bespoke search engines and other specialised tools built by ICIJ, and ICIJ coordinated the release of the information across the world. It was the biggest cross-border collaboration in journalism history. Before joining as the ICIJ’s first non-American director in September 2011, Ryle spent more than 20 years working as an investigative reporter, author and editor for Fairfax Media and won five Walkley Awards. He has more than 80 other journalism awards from seven countries, including two George Polk Awards, and honours from the Society of Professional Journalists, Overseas Press Club of America, the New York press club, Investigative Reporters and Editors, Harvard University and the University of Liege.
