Dennis Atkins is national affairs editor for The Courier-Mail, the Brisbane-based metropolitan daily newspaper in Queensland. He reports national politics from both Canberra and Brisbane, provides international commentary, and is a senior member of the paper’s leader writing team. Dennis is also a regular panelist on Insiders, the Australian Broadcasting Corporation’s flagship weekly politics television show. He also appears regularly as a political commentator on ABC radio throughout the country, and has a national weekly spot on PM Agenda on Sky News.He has been a journalist for more than four decades and has been a senior political writer in Adelaide, Canberra and Brisbane since the early 1980s. He has contributed to a number of books about politics, and has led discussion on academic panels examining elections and political trends.
Mr Atkins has worked for government at senior levels in Canberra and Brisbane, having been press secretary to Mick Young, the Special Minister of State in the Hawke Government, and communications director for former Queensland Premier Wayne Goss. He is also an occasional music critic and amateur historian and contributes to the yearly restaurant guide published by Gourmet Traveller magazine.
